Dinosaur Footprints - The Moenkopi Dinosaur Tracks
Bring out your inner-child and go pounce and stomp among real dinosaur footprints! You might even want to invite your actual child come along for this long-awaited, adventure opportunity. Just 70 miles outside of Flagstaff in Tuba City, located in the Navajo Nation, is a place where evidence of dinosaurs can be experienced first-hand. There are no glass exhibits with carefully cut, stone pieces of fossilized footprints; just actual dinosaur tracks all over a section along the bench below Hamblin Ridge.
These dinosaur tracks were formed in the early Jurassic period, approximately 200 million years ago and have been verified by paleontologists from Northern Arizona University. The specific type of dinosaur that left these footprints cannot be determined, therefore these are called "trace fossils". Trace fossils are classified by the shape of the prints and the type and layer of the rock the fossil is found on, which determines its age. With this information, it can be assumed these footprints belonged to the carnivorous dinosaurs Eubrontes, Grallator, Coelophysis kayentakatae or Dilophosaurus wetherilli.
Tips & Etiquette:
Once you pull up, you'll see a few stands with Navajo jewelry and other handmade crafts. A Navajo will greet you and ask if you'd like to take a tour. Though you do not need to pay an admission fee nor are you under any obligation to take a guided tour to explore this very cool piece of history, we do recommend that you either take the tour or buy a piece of Navajo art. This site is located on the Navajo Reservation and is a source of income for them. Not all of the information will be 100% scientifically correct, but it’s absolutely worth taking the tour if you have somewhere between $5 - $20 to spare. The guide may a set a small fee, but you should pay or tip what you think is fair and respectful for his or her time and effort.
Because the Moenkopi Dinosaur Tracks attraction is not protected, please be considerate. Do not litter, spill food or beverages or damage the site in any way. Use common sense, be respectful, and help protect this wild piece of our planet's history for generations to come.
This attraction comes very highly recommended. If you are headed toward the Four Corners or want to go on a day trip from Flagstaff with the family; this is a unique, special and affordable thing to do that can be appreciated by all.
